Day Sixty Six - Traverse City, Michigan to Garlets Corner, Michigan

Day 66
July 21st
Tuesday
55 Miles
Traverse City, Michigan to Garlets Corner, Michigan

We left the Traverse City State Park on the TART Bicycle Trail and worked our way out of town along the bay.  As we left town on N Long Lake Road we had a long climb that was rewarded with a fruit stand.  We had been told there were many fruit stands in the area with berries for sale, specifically cherries since Traverse City has become famous as the nations cherry capital.  We love cherries and were very excited when we happened upon the fruit stand owned by Rick Coors.  He had cherries, raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries fresh picked, washed and ready to eat. We picked out a container of cherries and one of raspberries. Rick placed the containers in plastic bags to make them easy for us to transport. We asked how much we owed and he told us nothing, he wanted us to have them. We enjoyed visiting with Rick, originally from Boulder, Colorado and a Broncos fan - GO BRONCOS! He said we were definitely the interesting story of the day at his fruit stand.  The cherries and raspberries did not last long when we took a break a little later in our ride.  They were delicious!!  It is amazing the difference in texture and flavor when fruit is fresh picked. We could not stop eating them until they were gone...THANK YOU RICK for your generosity!

Our ride was a mixture of hills, tree lined back roads along lakes, and rolling farmland dotted with dairies, old barns, and silos. We had a very enjoyable day that also took us through Interlochen, Michigan home to the Interlochen Center for the Arts. Interlochen.org - another place that would be great to spend time.

We arrived in Garlets Corner, Michigan to camp at Peterson Creek Cabins and Camping. This is a family owned business started by the grandparents of the current owner. For only $12 we had a large spot nestled in the trees along Peterson Creek.  This river is also known as a good place to search for Petoskey Stones and agate.  The owner had been out that day searching for stones.

Thank you Rick for the wonderful fruit! It was wonderful meeting you!!

The corn is growing!  In Minnesota it was waist high

The trees are very large
