74 Miles
Crystal Falls, Michigan to Escanaba, Michigan
Crystal Falls, Michigan to Escanaba, Michigan
We knew we had a lot of miles to cover due to lack of services on this portion of the route so we were on the road by six. The route most of the day was on highway 69, a smooth road with a good shoulder and light traffic. We were pleasantly surprised by the relatively flat road with gentle grade hills. We had a light head wind that was welcomed as a cool breeze on a warm day.
We rode through forest that changed to farm land surrounded by forest. Crops were potatoes, corn, and wheat that was golden and beautiful as it waved in the wind. In one field we saw a large group of birds grazing, we also saw many non poisonous western fox snakes crossing or attempting to cross the road. We stopped to hurry one across so it would not get run over by a car.
We passed a large LP Building Products wood processing plant. There were acres of an overwhelming amount of timber stacked to be processed. We have seen only a few of the lumber mills from Washington to Michigan and it makes us wonder how our forests can supply the amount of timber being processed.
In Escanaba Ronnie replaced the spoke on the trailer and patched a hole in one of our air mattresses. Clothing and equipment have held up nicely but are starting to show signs of wear. Many things fading, stained, or acquiring holes.
We have about 1700 miles left on this trip. We are amazed at how far we have been, the places we have seen, and people we have met.
