Day Fifty Three - Hayward, WI to Glidden, WI

Day 53
July 8th
Wednesday
Miles 57
Hayward WI to Glidden WI

A cool start to the day at 42 degrees. We left the KOA to ride 3 miles on highway 63, to Hayward and get back on route.  Highway 63 is a busy road with a narrow shoulder.  A man passed us in an SUV, and stopped on the shoulder in front of us. When we rode up to where he was he said he wanted to talk to us about how dangerous it is to ride a bike on the road. He couldn't believe we were pulling a trailer with a child in it on a busy highway. Then he looked in our trailer and was relieved we were carrying our gear, not a child. We did not like riding on that highway either but had no choice, we were thankful it was only 3 miles.

We rode out of Hayward on highway 77, climbing, with winding, rolling hills the first 32 miles to Clam Lake, the Elk capital of Wisconsin.  There were lakes at almost every turn. Scenery was beautiful and again today the road sides were lined with trees and wild flowers. We also rode on the Great Divide Scenic Highway http://www.travelwisconsin.com/natural-attractions-and-parks/great-divide-scenic-byway-200528 to Glidden, the Black Bear capital of Wisconsin.  We stayed in Glidden. The city offers free camping in their city park, Marion Park. We were able to put our tent under a covered shelter with concrete avoiding the wet grass and mosquitoes.
