Day Sixty - Indian Lake State Park to Saint Ignace

Day 60
July 15th
Wednesday
92 Miles
Indian Lake State Park to St. Ignace Michigan

It was a cold morning at the campground beside Indian Lake so we had a hard time getting started today.  After riding a short time we arrived in Manistique and decided to stop at a local cafe for breakfast.

Still in the Upper Peninsula, we rode along the top of Lake Michigan. Our route took us on highway 2 from Manistique to Saint Ignace.  Heavy traffic today, but shoulders were wide and good, most of the route was flat with a little bit of a headwind that was nice and cool off the lake.  Riding along the lake was amazing, it looked like it went on forever. The light wind made the water ripple causing a magnificent silver shimmer under the sun's rays shining directly on the water.

This was not a usual day for us.  We planned to stop for the night at around 60 miles but decided to push on to St. Ignace, our planned destination for the following day. We took several breaks and since the road was fairly flat with just a few low grade hills, and we had a nice cool breeze it worked out well. Our favorite break today was at Lehto's Pasties. We have been seeing pasty signs since entering the Michigan UP and decided to find out what they are. Pasties are a popular local cuisine dating back to the 1800's. They are a pastry dough filled with sirloin, potatoes, and rutabaga.  Very good!! Mr. Lehto was busy making them when we walked in, told us what they are, sold us one, and went back to work.  We watched as locals came and went carrying out bags of pasties.

As we rode, we thought it was sad to see so much real estate for sale and businesses closed along today's route. This is a beautiful area, you would like to see it thrive.

We are excited to spend the day at Mackinac Island tomorrow!  (Whether it is spelled Mackinac or Mackinaw, it is pronounced Mack-i-naw.)
