Day Seventy - Frankenmuth, Michigan to Port Huron, Michigan

Day 70
July 25th
Saturday
Miles 88
Frankenmuth, Michigan to Port Huron, Michigan

Last night we had another first, we saw lightning bugs!  It was so much fun watching them in the bushes around our camp site and all across the field in front of our camp site.

We left Frankenmuth early and traffic was mild as we rode through farm land.  The closer we got to Yale, 65 miles into our day, the traffic became heavy.  There was an annual Bologna Festival in Yale with lots of people attending. The streets were blocked off with vendor's booths and they were preparing for a parade of decorated ATV's. We had hoped to stay in Yale but there were no vacancies in the area.  Leaving Yale traffic was even heavier and about ten miles later we saw why, a large gathering of people were attending a 4-H show.

We arrived at the Port Huron KOA just as a storm moved in only to find out they had no vacancies.  We waited out the storm under their canopy looking for another campground or hotel.  Because of activities in the area - a softball tournament, 4-H show, boat races, etc...there was no place to stay in Port Huron OR Marysville, the next town coming up on our route. We were not sure what to do because on a bicycle you are limited in the distance you can travel looking for a place to stay. The manager at the KOA had just left for the day so we asked to speak to the person in charge for the evening, a young man named Pat. We explained our situation and told him we just needed a small space for our bike and tent, possibly in an overflow area.  We also stated we are not picky and we did not need a fire pit, picnic table, or electricity. He was very kind and understanding. It turned out that Pat lives in a house on site at the KOA so he allowed us to set up our tent beside his garage with use of the KOA facilities at no charge. Another amazing person we have met along the way!! Not sure what we would have done without his generosity.
