Day Fifty Nine - Escanaba, Michigan to Indian Lake State Park

Day 59
July 13th
Tuesday
65 Miles

Yesterday we decided to stay one more day in Escanaba based on the forecast of 100% rain all day and 80% that night. By noon the sun came out and it was a beautiful day. We wondered if we made the right decision until we heard there were very high winds and rain that evening at the campground we would have been staying in.

The Upper Peninsula is beautiful and our route took us along the west side of Lake Michigan. At times we could see the lake, other times the road was lined with tall trees and thick shrubbery.  We were on highway 2 most of the day with a wide shoulder. It was loud with traffic and a head wind but smooth and fairly flat. We turned off on county road 442 and had a few hills as it rolled through farm land.

We saw Sandhill Crane in their nesting habitat. That was fun to see since we both grew up seeing them migrate through Texas. We saw many other birds, a lot of wild turkeys, and a swan with two babies.

We stopped for a break at a road side park with lots of pesky Sea Gulls begging for food.  We met a local couple that recommended we go see a spring not far from where we planned to camp. We went the five miles off route to the Palm Book State Park, a nice park and the spring was a great treat to see.  It was a wonderful surprise when the Park Ranger told us bicycles are admitted free to Michigan State Parks.

That night we camped at Indian Lake State Park. It was very, very windy.  The water on the lake had large waves and the wind was cold.  We were thankful for a windbreak between our campsite and the lake. The State Park was well kept, had nice facilities and showers.  It also had a nice path along the lake with play grounds, picnic areas, and two phenomenal shelters built by the CCC during the depression.

The raft to see the Springs in the clear water below it.  The raft is powered by a hand turned wheel that pulls it to one end, then back.

Spring bubbling up 45 feet below

It has been a long time since we have been in a swing...
Ronnie went so high he touched the tree limbs!  It was fun!!
