Day Fifty Five - Boulder Junction, Wisconsin to Phelps, Wisconsin

Day 55
July 10th
Friday
37 Miles
Boulder Junction, Wisconsin to Phelps, Wisconsin

Over breakfast we had a nice visit with Dan, the owner of the Boulder Junction Travel Lodge. We watched the deer in the field behind the motel- twins and one other fawn with around eight adults. Dan told us about a protected herd of solid white deer that live in the area. He said they are not albino like many think because they have blue eyes.

Before leaving town we stopped to do laundry. Ronnie cleaned and lubed the bike gears and chains, checking everything. A group of three men pedaled in stopping to talk to us.  They decided it would be convenient to do laundry as well. Two were from West Virginia, the other from New Zealand. They are riding the same route we are, but East to West. It was nice to discuss information about the routes.

Leaving Boulder Junction has almost two miles of bike path then scenic back roads that are some of the prettiest we have seen. We started with hills, flattened out, then ended the day with hills.  We stayed in Phelps after learning the campground we planned to stay about 15 miles further has been closed. The lake in Phelps was very nice to sit by and watch the sun set.

We met Liza at the grocery store.  She is a local cyclist excited about biking in the area. She gave us bike trail maps for Vilas county.  It is beautiful there and they have plans for additional paved bike trails winding through their forests.
