Day Fifty - Osceola, WI to Cumberland, WI

Day 50
July 5th
Sunday
63 Miles
Osceola, Wisconsin to Cumberland, WI

Hills, hills, and more hills as we start to make our way across Wisconsin.  Riding through farm land with rolling hills of wheat, corn, and soy beans then riding along an area of forests with tree lined roads, then back to rolling hills planted with corn, soy beans, and alfalfa. Many of the alfalfa fields had bee boxes placed in close proximity. One farmer was cutting a field of alfalfa close to the road that smelled wonderful.

The history of the area we rode through today was interesting. We saw signs showing when many of the homesteads / farms were established and also indicated these were still owned by the same family.  The square, 2 to 3 story houses built in the late 1800's were updated and well maintained.  A few of the signs we noticed: a homestead est. 1886; dairy in 1883; mission cemetery in 1887; Blake school 1874; Lutheran church 1884; Apple River Post Office 1877.  We continue to enjoy the many old barns with silos, they add such character to the landscape.

Our day came to an end in Cumberland, Wisconsin called the island city because the original settlement in 1885 was located on land surrounded by the Beaver Dam Lake.

Alfalfa
Corn is growing well, one farmer said in a normal season
It should be knee high by now, it is already about waist high.

Purple Martin birdhouses were abundant in this area

Metal wire silos were once used to store corn cobs
