Day Twenty Two & Twenty Three - Eureka to Whitefish, Montana and a rest day

Day 22 & 23
June 7th & 8th
Sunday - Monday
60 Miles
Eureka to Whitefish, Montana and a rest day

As we packed to leave, four white tailed deer trotted into the campground.  When they saw us, the tails went in the air, wagging as they hopped and ran to cover.  From Eureka on Old Tobacco Highway we had a steep climb through an area where we saw many more white tailed deer, one mule deer, and wild turkey.  The 14 mile ride on Old Tobbaco Road to Fortine was the best part of the day.  We enjoyed seeing the deer, horse farms, meadows, and wild turkey along this very pretty stretch of road.  At our turn to join the route on Highway 93 we stopped for breakfast at a locally owned roadside cafĂ© with outdoor seating. The servings were generous and the food was very good.

Highway 93 was very busy, rarely had a shoulder, and very rough most of the way.  It was hard to look up and see the surroundings.  Ronnie concentrated on missing pot holes or ruts in the road while Jamie watched the rear view mirror to let him know when cars were approaching.  We were very excited to enter Whitefish until we saw road construction signs.  We went on what felt like four wheeling through dirt and gravel for 3 miles.

As we arrived on downtown Whitefish, life was good!  We stopped at 2nd Street Pizza for a slice of Sicilian pizza, salad, an American chocolate chip cookie, and cold drinks. A couple came in that noticed our Cannondale tandem and said they had one as well.  They were returning from riding Going to the Sun Road in Glacier.  They told us it is open on the West side but still closed on the East for road construction.  This may change our route depending on when the East side opens.  We plan to go to Glacier Tuesday.

After the welcomed rest stop for pizza we set up camp at Whitefish RV and Campground.  Nice, clean facilities so we showered, washed clothes and went to bed early after a long day.

Monday, a day of rest.  The RV park also has a motel with a computer in the lobby...great time to catch up on the blog!

Many beautiful horse farms and horses

Which way do we go?
