Day Thirty Nine - Dickinson, ND to Glen Ullin, ND

Day 39
June 24th
Wednesday
61 Miles
Dickinson ND to Glen Ullin ND

Smell for the day:
Fresh Honey - we have seen bee boxes all along the route in North Dakota.  Today a truck transporting bee / honey boxes pulled out of a field and passed us.  The smell of fresh honey was amazing and wonderful.

Our day started like it ended yesterday, with thunderstorms.  We packed up and left our campsite at 7:30 watching the approaching dark blue sky.  On our way to get back on route we stopped at Walmart for a few supplies.  We were thankful we did. While there, the skies opened up and it started pouring down rain along with thunder and lightening. We moved our bicycle and trailer inside where the shopping carts are kept and waited for the storms to pass. It was 10:30 when we left for Glen Ullin hoping we could get there before that afternoon's projected storms.

Traffic was heavy until we were about 15 miles out of Dickinson.  We rode on the Old Red Trail Old Highway Ten Scenic Byway.  Gently rolling green hills mixed with farming and cattle grazing.  After 35 miles we stopped in Richardton to take a picture of the beautiful church we could see miles before arriving in the city. St Mary's Catholic Church is historic along with the Sacred Heart Monastery located west of Richardton. We decided to break for lunch at a nice grocery store with a deli also located at Richardton. At lunch we met Ole from Norway traveling by bike from Maine to Seattle. We enjoyed visiting with him and were very impressed by how light he travels.  His blog is velole.com.

As we continued riding on this scenic route we rode through Hebron, nicknamed The Brick City because of a brick factory that has been producing brick since 1904.

Our next stop was for the night in Glen Ullin.  We stopped at a store then set up camp at the Glen Ullin Memorial Park. The campground was a welcome site, very clean, and well maintained by friendly camp hosts that greeted us when we arrived.  The entire area from Richardton. Hebron, to Glen Ullin had very friendly people. Most everyone slowed to pass, smiled and waved, and anyone we spoke to wanted to know what they could do to help us.

After setting up camp, a rain storm approached so we quickly ate dinner, cleaned up and retreated to the tent for the evening.
