Day Twenty Eight - Cut Bank to Chester, Montana

Day 28
June 13th
Saturday
72 Miles
Cut Bank to Chester

Montana landscape traveling Highway 2 along the Hi-Line of rolling hills with wheat fields and silos.

After a night of high wind and rain we left around 7:30 for Chester, Montana.  We saw oil fields, natural gas, wind generators, wheat, and lots of trains.  Burlington Northern trains passed us many times today along the Montana Hi-Line. Some of the train conductors waved and blew the horn for us. It was fun hearing the trains in the distance then seeing them pass us.

We saw three other bike tourists today - two going West, one going East.

It is so different traveling in the wide open spaces on roads that looked as if they went on forever as the mountains continued to fade in the distant background.  Most of the small towns on the map consisted of a few farm houses and silos along the railroad.

We stopped and ate lunch at a picnic table by the old Galata motel. Ronnie loved the old sign. Early afternoon brought us to Chester, Montana.  The city of Chester offers bicyclist free camping at the city park with clean restrooms (no showers). It was a pretty, well kept park.  Several locals came out that evening to enjoy the park and let their children play.

Tomorrow we ride to Havre and get the spokes repaired at the Havre bicycle shop on Monday.
