Day Thirty One - Harlem to Malta, Montana

Day 31
June 16th
Tuesday
51 Miles
Harlem to Malta

We were up early to be on the road by 7 am stopping by Albertson's for some fruit on our way out of town.  The clerk told Ronnie it is the smallest Albertson's in the company.

A few miles from Harlem we approached Ft Belknap Indian Reservation to ride on BIA 9 & 6 - this route was quiet with very little traffic and nice scenery.

Back on Highway 2 it was nice to have shoulders that were fairly wide.  We had a headwind all day so we worked for every mile.  Stopping at the Hi Way store and cafe in Dodson for a break, the owner offered to sell us the store telling us we need to get off that bike and start working.  We told him we owned and operated a store for 14 years, his comment was, "I have been doing this for 15 years!"

The landscape changed to rolling hills and beautiful wildflowers the remainder of the way to Malta.  There is a large number of long billed Curlew birds in this area.  One flew next to Ronnie's head making a lot of noise (they must of had little ones close by) then when we were close to Malta about twenty flew in front of us like they were our welcoming party leading the way.

We camped at the Trafton City Park for $3.  Shortly after arriving in Malta we met a cyclist from Alaska on his way to Portland, Maine. He stayed at the hotel close to the park.  Later that evening two West bound cyclist arrived to camp in the city park.  They are riding from New York to Portland, Oregon.  They warned us about riding through the Saco flats the following day, they said the mosquitoes attack while you are riding at full speed!

From a distance we thought this was white rocks piled in the field

This very noisey bird would fly very close to Ronnie's head and in front of us
