Day Twenty One - From McGillivray Campground to Eureka, Montana

Day 21
June 6th
Saturday
52 Miles

From McGillivray Campground to Eureka, Montana

An amazing 35 mile ride on Forest Road 228, a secluded road lined with trees and rock cliffs following the Kookanusa Lake. (Lake Koocanusa is a reservoir formed by the damming of the Kootenai River by the Libby Dam. The lake is formed north of the dam for 48 miles to the Canadian border and continues 42 miles into Canada.)  Lots of climbing and nice downhills. The day started out a cold 40 degrees, we enjoyed it while it lasted as temperatures reached close to 90 by the afternoon

We saw one deer and were not so pleasantly surprised by skunks twice.  The skunks were too close for comfort beside the road so we dodged moving to the other side.  Thankfully they ran the opposite direction, tails in the air but did not spray.

We joined Highway 37 by crossing the longest, tallest bridge in Montana.  Highway 37 was very busy the remainder of our ride to Eureka.  In Eureka we camped at the city's Riverside Park along side a family of nine riding an off road route from Canada to Mexico.  The park was beautiful and had wonderful shade trees.
