Day Thirty Seven - Glendive, MT to Medora, ND

Day 37
June 22nd
Monday
72 Miles
Glendive, Montana to Medora, North Dakota

Our fourth state!!

Long day but fairly easy with a tail wind most of the day.

We made lots of stops and visited with an West bound cyclist so the ride took longer than usual.  It was a fantastic day for riding, nice weather and a cool breeze all day.

We had breakfast at Subway in Glendive along with about twelve local retired BSNF railroad employees.  This was their morning hangout for coffee. They wanted to hear about our trip and gave us information and things they like about places we will be traveling.

Riding on I 94 was better than we expected with a nice wide shoulder.  We only rode on it a few miles before our route gave us the option of riding on Old Highway 10. This route had more hills and climbing but the scenery and lack of traffic more than made up for it.  We saw mule deer bouncing across the road as we approached, elk, quail, prairie chickens, and our first rattlesnake sunning on the side of the pavement.

Our first break was in Wibaux, 29 miles into our ride and a short distance from the North Dakota border.  Our second break was not planned, as we pulled off to take a picture at the Entering North Dakota sign we picked up a large screw....Ronnie changed a flat in no mans land between the leaving Montana sign and entering ND sign.

Our favorite stop of the day was is Sentinel Butte, ND.  A very pretty little town of 56.  We stopped to read a historical sign and two different residents stopped to see if we were okay or if we needed anything.

The North Dakota valleys we rode through were beautiful.  A lot of ranch land with tall green grass, and lots of cows and horses - we even saw four cowboys (one cowgirl) horseback moving cattle.

A few miles from Medora we met Manual from Germany.  He is headed West.  We had a nice visit with him sharing information.  He gave us lots of great ideas for touring Germany ;-).

In Medora we stopped by Dakota Cyclery to pick up two new tires and two more tubes.  The owner of the shop is wonderful and very helpful.  She seems to love what she does.  We stayed at the Medora Campground on her recommendation.  Only $20 with nice restrooms and showers, a laundry
facility, and small store very close to everything in town but secluded enough to be quiet.
