Day Eighty - Fair Haven, New York to Redfield, New York

Day 80
August 4th
Tuesday
Miles 68
Fair Haven, NY to Redfield, NY

A day of hills and detours. We have been told much of the remaining route will consist of steep hills. Today we had a few hills and thanks to road construction detours we had ten additional miles to ride.

Road construction blocked CR 6, no problem, we stayed on SR 3 seeing where it would connect back on route in about 15 miles. Problem, not far from where we would have rejoined our route, SR 3 was closed for road construction and the detour almost ten miles to get back to our route.  This would not be so bad in a car but ten miles on hills is time consuming on a loaded down bicycle.

We rode through beautiful rolling hills dotted with old farms, homes, and dairies.  We love the old barns and the many homes built in the 1800's with distinct characteristics.  The most interesting thing we saw today, bundles of wheat gathered, hand tied with pieces of the wheat, then stacked in the field in rows.  While riding through the area of Richland and Orwell people stopped and waved, some of the children got very excited when they saw us ride by. A historical area we rode through was Mexico, NY est. in 1792 and the village of Texas, NY.

After a 16 mile fairly steady climb we arrived in Redfield.  The Otter Limits & Nook Motel was a welcome sight and pleasant surprise.  The owners are friendly, very nice people.  They have a motel, store, and restaurant to meet all your needs. Rooms are large, clean, and comfortable. This is a wonderful place to stay in a beautiful part of New York.  Summer is a good time to fish, and hike. Winter is the busy time of year for this area attracting snow mobiles. Redfield receives snow early in the season and has miles and miles of groomed snow mobile trails.

Hannah and her father stayed at Otter Limits as well.  Hannah has been such a delight to meet, she always has a smile on her face, she has a positive attitude and is definitely finding joy in her journey.
