Day 2
May 18th
Monday
41 Miles
From Kitsap we rode to the Ferry at Port Townsend. We rode the Ferry across to Whidbey Island. At Port Townsend and Whidbey there were beautiful Victorian style homes with lace curtains. Whidbey had rolling green hills with cows, horses, dairies, and farms. In the first few miles we stopped at a quaint grocery store for fresh fruit and veggies. Several friendly people asked about our travel and wished us well.
The ride / climb to Fort Ebey State Park was fairly difficult. The area was beautiful. We camped in a grass clearing surrounded by trees. An owl sat in a tree at the entrance of our camp for several hours. Just beyond our camp was a bluff overlooking the ocean. We were told the sunsets were some of the most beautiful anywhere and to be sure and go out on the bluff to enjoy it. When we went, we were surprised by a dense fog rolling in. The sun looked more like the moon behind the dense fog. The wind blowing off the ocean was very cold and damp, We had heard bells ringing earlier but had no idea it was announcing the dense fog.
The following morning we awoke to birds singing all around us. We rode into a light fog for a day that stayed very cool and cloudy.
