Day Six and Seven Rest Days at Colonial Creek Campground

Day 6 - 7
May 22nd & 23rd (Memorial Day Holiday Weekend)
Friday and Saturday
Rest Days

Since holiday traffic is expected to be heavy we made the decision to stay in Colonial Creek Campground at Diablo Lake for two 'rest' days.  This is good since our next day of riding is a 30+ mile climb to Rainy Pass and Washington Pass on SR 20.

Friday we enjoyed a short walk on a sunny morning, coffee by the river, then sat on logs in the warm sun while I wrote in my journal.  (Thank you Steve, I love the journal!) The afternoon brought thunder showers so we retreated to our tent for a nap.  The rain cleared in the early evening so we enjoyed dinner and a campfire.

Saturday morning we hiked the Thunder Knob trail.  It started out along the river, then went winding through what looked like a rain forest.  Every shade of green could be seen in this lush area. We have never seen so many different types of moss, fern, and delicate flowers lining the forest floor with a canopy of western red cedars.  The trail climbed up to a sunny area covered with pine trees overlooking Diablo lake.  The mountains were majestic and mystical with clouds hanging low in front of them.

When we returned to camp Ronnie started checking gear to get us ready to be back on the road. He oiled the chains and adjusted brakes, then when checking the tires found the back tire on the bike had the side wall coming apart.  We had an extra tire he put on and we should be ready to go.  Tomorrow is the first two passes of five we will go over in the Cascades.
